What are the best games on PS4? Sony's fourth home console is widely regarded for its immense library of great games, and so putting together a definitive list is never going to be easy. That's why we asked for your help in making this best PS4 games guide. All of the games that you'll find on these pages have been ranked and rated by the Push Square community.

But again, it wasn't easy! The PS4 really does stand as one of Sony's greatest achievements. It was a console generation that propelled the Japanese giant to new heights thanks to irresistible exclusive games and a massive catalogue of software that suits all tastes and needs.

Much of the PS4's success, both commercial and critical, can be attributed to the fact that Sony learned from the mistakes it made during the PS3 era. In contrast to its cell processor-based predecessor, the PS4 was designed to be easy to develop for — and this decision paved the way for nigh unstoppable system that came close to reaching PS2 levels of popularity.

Sony also heavily invested in its online infrastructure during the PS4 generation. The PlayStation Network, or more specifically, the PlayStation Store, became the company's biggest money maker, as all of those great games helped entice players towards a digital future.

It really is all about the games, isn't it? The PS4's identity has been defined by exclusive marquee titles like 2018's God of War, Bloodborne, and Horizon Zero Dawn. Indeed, the exclusives list is impressively long — it's no surprise that Sony decided to gather all of its first party teams under the PlayStation Studios umbrella during the PS4 era.

But it's not just the exclusives. So many incredible third-party releases arrived in the PS4's prime. The Witcher 3, Persona 5, Red Dead Redemption 2, and many, many more. Looking back, it's a truly remarkable lineup.

50. Monster Hunter: World (PS4)

Monster Hunter: World (PS4)
Monster Hunter: World (PS4)
Publisher: Capcom / Developer: Capcom
Release Date: 26th Jan 2018 (USA) / 26th Jan 2018 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Collection (Until 9th May 2023)

The Monster Hunter series has always been popular, but it never properly resonated with a Western audience. That is, until Monster Hunter: World arrived. This action RPG puts the focus on defeating larger-than-life creatures, creating better gear from the loot they drop, and repeating this forever, and it's an incredibly compelling formula. World streamlines the process a little, lowering the barrier to entry just enough that it was an enormous hit worldwide. With a wide selection of weapons to master, a near endless gameplay loop, and super fun co-op excursions, this is an incredibly addictive, consistently satisfying game.

49. Rocket League (PS4)

Rocket League (PS4)
Rocket League (PS4)
Publisher: Epic Games / Developer: Psyonix Studios
Release Date: 7th Jul 2015 (USA) / 7th Jul 2015 (UK/EU)

Supersonic acrobatic rocket-powered battle-cars take to the field in Rocket League, a chaotic clash of arcade racing and the beautiful game. Slick controls ensure that its simple premise scores with Messi-like precision, providing a multiplayer experience that's easy to pick-up but almost impossible to put down. Nifty netcode keeps you on the pitch as much as possible, while unlockables allow you to kit out your car with sombreros and other similarly silly garbs.

48. DOOM (PS4)

DOOM (PS4)
DOOM (PS4)
Publisher: Bethesda Softworks / Developer: id Software
Release Date: 13th May 2016 (USA) / 13th May 2016 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

One of the FPS originals, id Software resurrected DOOM with spectacular results. An irreverent story-telling approach and genuinely innovative arcade action makes for one of the most gratifying experiences on the PS4, and while the multiplayer mode is a bit of a stinker, the slick campaign with stunningly old-school level design makes this a standout shooter.

47. Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)

Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain (PS4)
Publisher: Konami / Developer: Kojima Productions
Release Date: 1st Sep 2015 (USA) / 1st Sep 2015 (UK/EU)

Determining how highly regarded Metal Gear Solid V: The Phantom Pain is really depends on what type of person you ask. Open world fanatics rightfully claim it's one of the genre's best, with vast stretches of land that let you come up with infiltration and escape plans. However, MGS enthusiasts aren't so hot on the fifth mainline entry thanks to a story that feels half-finished. It's an excellent playing game, but a disappointing Metal Gear Solid.

46. Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4)

Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4)
Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition (PS4)

When it comes to endless character progression and loot, very few games measure up to Diablo III: Reaper of Souls - Ultimate Evil Edition. An action RPG that offers what is in theory an infinite amount of stuff to do, it's a blast whether you're playing with friends or you're grinding through the demon hordes all on your own. Supremely polished and intuitive, it's hands down one of the tightest titles on PS4.

Its simplicity is its real strength, and it's a perfect example of how several brilliant ideas can fuse to form an uncompromising, definitive whole. Publisher: Skybound Games / Developer: Team Cherry
Release Date: 25th Sep 2018 (USA) / 25th Sep 2018 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

At first glance it's easy to pin down Hollow Knight as just another 2D metroidvania that boasts a steep challenge, but it's much more than that. There's a fantastic sense of wonder to Hollow Knight — everything that you see and do in this meticulously crafted title is brilliantly contextualised, resulting in an adventure that oozes charm, character, and memorable moments.

43. Dark Souls Remastered (PS4)

Dark Souls Remastered (PS4)
Dark Souls Remastered (PS4)
Publisher: Bandai Namco / Developer: FromSoftware
Release Date: 25th May 2018 (USA) / 25th May 2018 (UK/EU)

Dark Souls has earned a rabid, loyal fanbase with its uniquely weighty combat, richly realised worlds, and challenging (but fair) gameplay. Lordran is beautifully realised on PS4, its foreboding architecture and often terrifying denizens forcing players to learn from trial and error. Dark Souls isn’t for everyone, but those that persevere will forever praise the Sun.

42. Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (PS4)

Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (PS4)
Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster (PS4)
Publisher: Square Enix / Developer: Square Enix
Release Date: 12th May 2015 (USA) / 15th May 2015 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

If you're itching for an angsty JRPG that's very much a product of its time, Final Fantasy X|X-2 HD Remaster is the game for you. Square Enix did a great job of updating this saga for both modern and nostalgic audiences. Even though parts of it have definitely aged, Final Fantasy X remains a landmark release, telling a love story that's full of weird twists, spread across an intriguing and unique fantasy world. X-2, on the other hand, borders on fan fiction. A direct sequel to X that's campy beyond measure — but it's still a fun time thanks to well worked gameplay mechanics.

41. Inside (PS4)

Inside (PS4)
Inside (PS4)
Publisher: Playdead / Developer: Playdead
Release Date: 23rd Aug 2016 (USA) / 23rd Aug 2016 (UK/EU)
Available On: PS+ Extra

Inside is 2D platforming perfection, but it’s the ending that we all remember it for. After two or so hours of impressive puzzle-solving and hints that something isn’t quite right, the game goes off the rails with a 20-minute sequence that is perhaps one of the most memorable of the PS4 generation. An incredible game that has cemented Playdead’s position among the gaming greats.
